Putting Your Contributions to Work
For BPW and Our Community
Program Highlights
Business and Professional Women/River City, Inc., the largest
chapter of Business and Professional Women/USA, seeks to empower women
in the workplace and in the community through education, information,
and advocacy. Below are the various opportunities we provide for working
women to enhance their leadership development; professional skill enrichment;
mentoring abilities; and their access to business, civic, and legislative
information. As a result of the following programs, not only do our members
benefit, but also the Louisville community becomes a major beneficiary.
As an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, your corporate support would
go a long way in helping us continue the following beneficial programs
and others for BPW and the Louisville community.
LEADERSHIP BPW
Designed to facilitate involvement in the Louisville community and to
increase members' awareness of Louisville's economic leverage, participants
meet monthly with community leaders and corporate executives. Development
of the attributes needed to move into business and community leadership
roles also is part of the program. In order to graduate, participants
must meet set leadership requirements.
INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (IDP)
IDP enhances professional and personal skills through interactive participation
in expert-facilitated workshops. Topics include: public speaking, effective
interviewing, basic finance and more. Participants have the opportunity
to represent BPW/River City at regional, state, and national levels.
MENTORING PROGRAM -CHOICES
In collaboration with the Jefferson County Public Schools, BPW members
teach 9th and 10th grade girls the importance and power of making wise
choices. Through thought-provoking exercises, these young women learn
to make sound decisions about career options, budgeting choices, and marriage
and family responsibilities - all based on measurable goals and real-life
consequences. BPW volunteers taught students
at three schools: Southern High, Central High and Iroquois High. A fourth
school has requested the program and it is under consideration.
MENTORING PROGRAM - MARYHURST
Through mentoring young girls at Maryhurst, BPW members serve as tangible
role models for these emotionally challenged adolescent girls. Maryhurst
is a private, not-for-profit, nonsectarian agency providing residential
and community-based treatment programs for girls aged 13-18. BPW mentors
meet with their mentee over a six-week period. Mentors and mentees attend
one of BPW/River City's regular program meetings, giving the young girls
an opportunity to see professional women conduct a business meeting.
WOMEN IN TRANSITION (WIT)
WIT provide resource information, support, and options for women experiencing
today's dynamic transitional work environments. Last year's recipient
was the Creative Employment Program of the Center for Women and Families.
Working with abused women, the program teaches women the necessary skills
for the workplace. To help them get ready BPW donated gently used
suits, blouses and slacks. The WIT Committee also lists web sites in the
BPW/River City newsletter, which provide information to assist women through
various life and career transitions.
